Oakland Music Matters is a nonprofit dedicated to providing music education to K–12 students and incubating emerging music and arts nonprofits, creating a fun and welcoming space for learning. Its mission is to empower young people to lead, build sustainable success, and nurture a connected, inspired next generation that keeps Oakland’s spirit alive through music.
We created a visual identity for Oakland Music Matters as it begins a new chapter after taking over the Harmony Project Oakland program. Guided by the essence of energetic, empowering, and community-focused, we developed a clear, friendly, and cohesive system that engages students, families, funders, and the broader Oakland community across multiple platforms.
The logo represents the idea that Oakland Music Matters holds the flame of inspiration, creativity, and passion, with music at the heart of the growth and expression. It draws from both the violin and the guitar to symbolize the power of musical learning. Just as the flame lights the way, music guides students on their journey, helping them grow, build confidence, express their creativity, and reach their full potential. The design reflects the connection between students, teachers, and the Oakland community, celebrating the vibrant, inspiring spirit of Oakland. Fireworks serve as the secondary element, representing the result of that initial spark, once the flame is lit, it bursts into fireworks, allowing each child to bloom in their own unique and radiant way.
“You really embodied and captured what we’re doing. We are so grateful.
You’ve done such a great job of managing through this process. It was a learning process for all of us. You guys stuck to your guns and made us believe what you were saying. You really had a vision and stuck with it.
I congratulate you on a work well done and a project well managed.”
